NAPA’s Newest Sorority Affirms Association’s Commitment to Expansion The National APIDA Panhellenic Association is proud to welcome its newest member, Alpha Sigma Rho National Sorority, Inc. With charters granted in 10 universities across seven states concentrated in the southwest and east coast regions of America, Alpha Sigma Rho joins NAPA as the Association’s 19th member organization effective March 30th, 2020. “It has been four years since NAPA has added a member organization, and the addition of Alpha Sigma Rho exemplifies our mission of continuing to support the growth of APIDA fraternities and sororities,” says NAPA Chair Bilal Badruddin. “We believe that Alpha Sigma Rho’s membership will be mutually beneficial, and I look forward to seeing both NAPA and Alpha Sigma Rho grow.” Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on April 2, 1998 at the University of Georgia at Athens. The organization was created to provide and serve as representation for Asian women within the university campus and the community. As the first Asian-interest sorority established in the state of Georgia, their founders aimed to build an organization that embodied Asian-awareness, diversity, academics, and sisterhood. “When we received our invitation to join NAPA, it was the best news that we received in a while given what’s going on in the world right now, and we are thankful for this opportunity,” says Alpha Sigma Rho National President Elysia Boleware. “It is with our hope that Alpha Sigma Rho and NAPA organizations can unite to bring Asian awareness to the university campus and community as a means of providing education and understanding to those unfamiliar with Asian values and traditions; it is important that America sees more Asian representation and recognize that we are in this together.” “We enjoyed communicating with Alpha Sigma Rho’s National Board throughout the entire affiliation process and are energized to see them flourish in our community,” says Director of Research and Development Bryan Dosono. “We commit to providing them with resources and support to enable them fully to live their mission.” ### About NAPA NAPA organizations set the gold standard for Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) fraternities and sororities. For Immediate Release NAPA announces the election results of Bilal Badruddin as its Chair-Elect and Trang Bui as its Secretary-Elect. Badruddin previously served NAPA in various roles including Lead of Desi Initiatives, Direction of Operations and Programming, and most recently as Vice Chair. Bui begins her term as a first-year officer for the NAPA Board. Badruddin is a Summer 2008 initiate of Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity, Inc. at Temple University. “I am honored to serve NAPA in this capacity. When I first began volunteering for NAPA, I hoped to one day become Chair, and I am elated that the time is now.” says Badruddin. He adds, “As NAPA approaches its quindecennial it is imperative that we reflect on its 15-year history, advocate for member organizations, and collaborate with campus-based professionals, in order to effectively support the growth of NAPA, its member organizations, and APIDA Greek Life.” In addition to his role on NAPA Board, Bilal is pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies at Howard University, where he also serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations. Bilal brings a unique perspective to the role of Chair, as he has also worked as a campus-based fraternity and sorority advisor and volunteered as the National President of Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity, Inc. Bui is a Fall 2013 initiate of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. at Wichita State University. “I am delighted and honored to serve NAPA as a first-year officer. It has always been a goal of mine to be involved with this organization and collaborate with other Greek leaders around the nation. I am excited to continue the work that has been done before me and I am dedicated to creating a space that encourages unity among our member organizations.” says Bui. She adds, “NAPA provides a platform for APIDA fraternal members to connect and be change agents in the community. I am elated to see what the future holds for us.” Bui is currently a graduate student in the Educational Psychology—Higher Education/Student Affairs program at Wichita State University, where she also works as a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Success. According to current NAPA Chair, Hannah Seoh, “I’m very proud to see the growth that NAPA has had over the last decade. To continue to have leadership that is representing the field of higher education is very exciting and lets me know that the future of NAPA is in good hands. I look forward to seeing continued growth and progress for the APIDA community and our contributions to fraternity and sorority life in the years to come.” Both Badruddin and Bui are both inducted members of the Order of Omega. In the latest edition of AFA Essentials, NAPA Chair Hannah Seoh and Past Chair Brian Gee describe the current landscape of risk management among NAPA fraternities and sororities. In June 2019, NAPA conducted an environmental survey to review each of the member organizations’ risk management policies and procedures. The survey covered items such as the content of the current risk management policy, as well as how each organization managed distribution and education of their policies. Based on this information, NAPA worked with Holmes Murphy Fraternal Practice to host a webinar in August 2019 to introduce the new Holmes Murphy risk management policy template and explain some of the history and background of the updates. As of September 2019, several NAPA member organizations have updated their policies based on the Holmes Murphy template. NAPA and Holmes Murphy are working with each of the groups to not only update their policies, but to explore various ways to improve their education and enforcement efforts.
